About BGCWPA

For 135+ years, Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Pennsylvania has worked to advance the potential of youth and teens throughout the Pittsburgh region, now serving more than 7,500 youth and families across 18 locations. We are a safe place for kids to prepare for careers and life, with programs including preschool, before/afterschool, summer camp, teen mentoring, workforce development, STEAM, and sports. Position Description

AmeriCorps is the national service initiative signed into law by President Clinton in 1993.Thousands of Americans of all backgrounds have met community needs and earned education awards in return due to AmeriCorps programs. AmeriCorps joins a long tradition of encouraging and rewarding service, dating back to America's beginning, including the Civilian Conservation Corps, the GI Bill, and the Peace Corps. The mission of AmeriCorps is to improve lives, strengthen communities, and foster civic engagement through service and volunteering.

AmeriCorps members at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Western PA embody this mission by engaging in the LEAD process, a structured approach that empowers them to develop and implement impactful programs for youth.

  • Learn: Gain valuable insights into youth development and best practices in program design by collaborating with clubhouse leadership and experienced professionals. Members will actively observe and engage in current programs to build a strong foundation for their work.
  • Educate: Share knowledge and foster learning by designing and delivering an innovative program tailored to a specific age group. Members will inspire youth to grow and succeed through engaging and meaningful activities.
  • Activate: Implement programs that motivate and energize youth, encouraging their active participation and fostering a sense of belonging. Members will take the lead in creating a dynamic and inclusive environment.
  • Develop: Build impactful relationships and professional skills while guiding youth in their personal and academic growth. Members will continuously refine their programs based on feedback and outcomes to ensure lasting success.

Benefits of AmeriCorps Service

  • Members will receive a biweekly living allowance. The amount is based on the service term that the member chooses. 
  • Education Award: After successfully completing your AmeriCorps term of service and enrolling in the National Service Trust, you are eligible to receive the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award. You can use the award to repay qualified student loans and to pay current or future (within 7 years) educational expenses at eligible institutions of higher education and training program.
  • Towards the end of service, all members will have the opportunity to work with BGCWPA’s HR team to develop a high quality resume/cover letter and participate in mock interviews. 
  • Members will have the opportunity to be mentored by experienced professionals in the childcare field, gaining insights and best practices to enhance their skills and career development. 
  • All AmeriCorps members who successfully finish their term will receive a completion certificate as well as a letter of recommendation.
  • Participate in a variety of training related to youth development. Topics may include trauma informed care, CPR/First Aid Certification, BGCWPA programming, and safety. 
  • As an AmeriCorps member you may be eligible for forbearance on your qualified student loans during your term of service.
  • Upon service completion, receive access to AmeriCorps Alumni benefits and resources.

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • High school graduate or GED recipient, or working towards attaining during the term of service.
  • US Citizenship or permanent residency status (Green Card).
  • Perform additional duties and tasks assigned by leadership/supervisors that follow all AmeriCorps policies and regulations.
  • The usual and customary methods of performing the jobs function require the following physical demands: lifting & carrying up to 50 pounds, pushing, any/or pulling, climbing to include steps, balancing, stooping, standing, sitting, kneeling, crawling, crouching, and signification fine fingered dexterity. Ability to tolerate environmental conditions: air conditioning, heat, dust fumes, noise, close quarters, etc.
